We offer a testing service for measuring the following elastic constants:

  1. Young's modulus

  2. Shear modulus

  3. Poisson's ratio

  4. Internal friction (Q-1)

Complies with ASTM E1876/C1259

Internal friction can also be measured using two distinct methods:

  1. Log-decrement - the waveform is filtered using a narrow bandpass filter centered at the resonant frequency of interest and then an exponential curve is fitted to the waveform envelope (see Impulse Excitation).

  2. Half-peak broadband - the width of the peak of interest in the frequency spectrum (amplitude vs time) at the mid-amplitude is used to calculate the internal friction (see Impulse Excitation).

Method 1 is appropriate for measuring light-medium damped materials; method 2 for medium-heavily damped materials

High temperature and cryogenoc testing available
